Environment and sustainability
At Hall & Wilcox, we recognise the real and pressing challenges that our community and the environment faces, and that we have a responsibility to reduce the impact our business has on the environment.
Through our governance structure, which includes our Environment and Sustainability Committee, our managing partner and Board, we are committed to making environmentally conscious decisions regarding the operation of our business.
Our goal is to significantly reduce the production of greenhouse gases, the depletion of natural resources and the generation of non-recyclable waste from our business activities.
As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, Hall & Wilcox is a member of the Australian Legal Sector Alliance (AusLSA). AusLSA is an industry-led association working to promote sustainable practices across the legal sector. Members of AusLSA provide information about their sustainability and achievements, which are compiled into a public report.
We are committed to continue the annual reporting of our environmental impact and to continue to make our internal reports available to the public through AusLSA’s annual report and our website.
Since joining AusLSA in 2012, Hall & Wilcox have reduced their per employee carbon emissions by 38%. Over the same period, we have been able to reduce our per employee paper consumption by 43%.
Our recent move to open plan offices allows us to keep our electricity usage to a minimum. The open plan set up not only allows services such as air-conditioning to function more efficiently but also reduces the floor space we require to operate our business. Our lights operate on a sensor system, and we actively encourage our employees to switch off computers at the end of the day.
We are keeping our paper usage to a minimum by setting our printers to default duplex printing, using ‘follow-me’ printing and through the implementation of our e-filing policies. We have clear guidelines for waste and recycling management in all of our offices, and the majority of our printing is done using recycled paper.
We are also partnering with some of our key clients in the energy and resources space to offer our employees access to innovative environmental sustainability solutions, for example, solar power battery packs that can be installed at home.
