We recognise the real and pressing environmental challenges that we all face, as well as our responsibility to reduce the impact of our business on the environment.
Our goal is to significantly reduce the production of greenhouse gases, the depletion of natural resources and the generation of non-recyclable waste from our business activities. We do this by making environmentally conscious decisions about the operation of our business – an approach that’s monitored by our Environment and Sustainability Committee, our Managing Partner and our Board.
Since 2012, we have reduced our per employee carbon emissions by 38%. Over the same period, we have been able to reduce our per employee paper consumption by 43%. In collaboration with WithOneSeed, we also reached our commitment to offset 100% of our emissions since 2017.
Some of our sustainability initiatives
Our move to open plan offices allows us to minimise our electricity usage. The open plan layout also allows services, such as air-conditioning, to function more efficiently and reduces the floor space we require to operate our business. Our lights operate on a sensor system and we actively encourage our employees to switch off computers at the end of the day.
We keep our paper usage to a minimum by setting our printers to default duplex printing, using ‘follow-me’ printing and e-filing. We have clear guidelines for waste and recycling management in all of our offices and the majority of our printing is done using recycled paper.
We are also partnering with some of our key clients in the energy and resources space to offer our employees access to innovative environmental sustainability solutions, for example, solar power battery packs that can be installed at home.
We’re open about our performance
As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, we are a member of the Australian Legal Sector Alliance (AusLSA). AusLSA is an industry-led association working to promote sustainable practices across the legal sector. Members of AusLSA provide information about their sustainability and achievements, which are compiled into a public report.
We will continue to report our environmental impact annually and to make our internal environmental reports available to the public through AusLSA’s annual report and our website.
