Maddison Reznik is a Senior Associate Lawyer and Registered Trade Marks Attorney. Her passion in the law is in commercial practice, with a strong focus in intellectual property and technology. Her practice has seen her act for a wide variety of public and private entities, including major Commonwealth and Victorian Government departments and agencies, listed and unlisted companies, universities and research bodies.
Maddison is admitted as a lawyer in Victoria and the Commonwealth of Australia, as well as being a registered trade marks attorney with the Trans-Tasman Intellectual Property Attorneys Board. In 2022, Maddison graduated from the University of Melbourne with a specialist Masters of Intellectual Property Law.
Maddison regularly acts for Commonwealth and Victorian Governments in the procurement of high-value bespoke technology contracts. Her government practice includes advising on all aspects of a procurement, including probity and legal risks. Her public and private practice in the technology space includes drafting and advising on a wide range of contracts, including software licences, Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) agreements, cloud service agreements, evaluation and option agreements, and general licensing agreements.
Maddison’s background has provided her with exposure to a range of areas of law, including commercial law, intellectual property law, technology law (including relating to AI), privacy law, competition and consumer law, property law and employment law. This means that she is well accustomed to delving into new and complex areas.
Experience
- Acting for and advising a major Commonwealth Department on the acquisition of dedicated cloud services with a total contract value of $11 billion.
- Advising a Victorian Government Department on transitional arrangements between existing and upcoming providers in respect to food safety regulatory compliance software.
- Drafting legal protocols for the development of an ethical and legally 'minded' autonomous system for use in the defence industry.
- Advising a subsidiary of a former cooperative research centre (CRC) on the provision of warranties relating to software being divested under a share purchase agreement.
- Advising an ASX-listed biotechnology company on complex cross-licensing arrangements surrounding cancer treatment cells.
- Drafting intellectual property assignments and related-party licences on behalf of a large underwear and workwear clothing brand as a method of isolating and protecting intangible assets.
- Developing an extensive IP strategy, providing preliminary advice on the registrability of trade marks and filing over 20 Australian and New Zealand trade marks for a leading international sleep specialist company.
- Undertaking a 9 month secondment into the ICT Legal Team of a Canberra-based Commonwealth Agency, working on large technology transformation projects and general transactional matters in the ICT commercial space.
- Acting for a leading underwear brand in prosecuting and defending Federal Court litigation of consumer law and copyright disputes.
- Advising on and drafting corporate structure, trading and governance documentation for a medium-size construction enterprise, including intellectual propery licences, property leases, equipment hire agreement, general security deed and board documents.
- Advising the board of a registered charity on conflicts of interests and repurcussions under the Corporations Act and ACNC Act.
- Acting on behalf of two of Australia's leading telecommunications providers in the acquisition and management of their fixed wireless network sites.
