Hall & Wilcox proud to support ACHL on funding & development of Indigenous Elders village in Adelaide

This 40-unit Indigenous Elders village project, on Kaurna Yerta land, aims to provide culturally inclusive housing for Indigenous Elders, with government collaboration.

Hall & Wilcox has advised Tier 1 Aboriginal housing provider, Aboriginal Community Housing Limited (ACHL), on securing funding for the $12.17 million development of a 40-unit Indigenous Elders village in Bedford Park, Adelaide, on land owned by the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation and to be tenanted by Elders of the Kaurna Yerta community.

The project involves the development of new units with culturally inclusive features to ensure Indigenous Elders from the Kaurna Yerta community can age in place. It provides the groundwork for the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation to own and operate the village to benefit its own community in the long term.

The deal also involved bringing together several state and federal government bodies, including the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, Housing Australia and the South Australian Housing Trust, to support the development’s funding.

Partner Shaun Whittaker, assisted by Senior Associate Lauri Reid, was involved in structuring the transaction and procuring funding from the various stakeholders for ACHL to proceed with the development, as well as negotiating development and operational documentation.

‘This is a tremendous achievement for the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation, ACHL and us. We have worked collaboratively at all government levels to secure the funding for this significant investment in much needed housing for the Kaurna Yerta community,’ Shaun said.

‘It also demonstrates the ability of state and federal bodies to collaborate on funding for important projects such as this.’

This project is one of several projects that ACHL is developing across Australia to better secure future housing for Indigenous Australians.
