Hall & Wilcox advises Vapormedia on SuperCoach sale to News Corp Australia, fuelling the next wave of fantasy sports innovation

News7 July 2025

The team behind SuperCoach’s fantasy sports engine has joined News Corp Australia, with Hall & Wilcox advising Melbourne-based technology company Vapormedia on the strategic transaction.

Vapormedia co-developed and operated the technology that powers SuperCoach, Australia’s leading free-to-play fantasy sports platform. With over 430,000 registered users, SuperCoach runs fantasy games across AFL, NRL, BBL and NBL and is one of Australia’s most engaging digital sports experiences. In May 2025 alone, users spent on average 173 minutes on the free-to-play platform.

The acquisition by Newscorp positions the business well to expand into new sports including the NBA, NFL and Formula 1, and unlocks greater flexibility for commercial partnerships, new formats and deeper integration with content creators.

Hall & Wilcox advised Vapormedia on all legal aspects of the transaction. The team was led by Partners James Bull and James Deady, supported by Associate Brooke Lynskey, with Partner Karl Rozenbergs, Special Counsel Alexandra Gallagher and Associate Laura D’Aprano advising on the employment aspects of the deal.

James Deady said, ‘Hall & Wilcox has supported the Vapormedia team for the past 16 years so it is incredibly satisfying seeing Vapormedia reach this significant milestone.  It is a testament to Peter, Kelly and the Vapormedia team to have achieved this acquisition by a global media business such as NewsCorp.’

As part of the acquisition, Vapormedia’s development team will transition to News Corp to lead the next evolution of SuperCoach – supporting broader audience targeting, shorter-form game experiences and greater integration with its thriving creator community across digital content channels.
