Making complex FIRB rules easier to navigate

Australia's foreign investment rules can be complex. For clients considering a property or business transaction, working out whether Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval is required can mean navigating complicated legislation before a transaction can progress.

In our Corporate and Commercial team saw an opportunity to make that easier.

Working with our Client Solutions team, I helped take that complexity and turn it into something much simpler: an intuitive digital tool that helps clients quickly understand whether FIRB approval may be required. 

The result was the FIRB App. 

The app guides clients through a series of plain-language questions about their transaction and generates a short report with a preliminary outcome. The complex thinking happens behind the scenes, with a decision tree applying the relevant FIRB rules based on each client's answer.

The FIRB app gives our clients a quicker and easier way to get preliminary guidance across a wide range of property and business transactions.

But making something simpler doesn't mean simplifying the expertise behind it. There will always be transactions that require deeper analysis, so we built a seamless way for clients to connect with our FIRB specialists when they need us.
