Making workers' compensation knowledge more accessible

After working with our clients for a couple of years, I started to notice a gap. Self-insurer teams were navigating complex workers’ compensation laws and compliance requirements, often without access to specialised in-house training.
I saw an opportunity to change that. If we could make our knowledge more accessible, we could help clients build capability within their own teams, reduce the risk of costly errors and ultimately support better return-to-work outcomes.
I took the idea to our partners and business development team, and we brought together people from across Hall & Wilcox – workers’ compensation and employment lawyers, alongside our business development, marketing, digital and events specialists.
Together, we asked: what do our clients find hardest to navigate, and how can we make that knowledge practical and accessible?
The answer became the A–Z Series – an online training program designed to share our expertise with clients and the broader workers’ compensation community.
'If we could make our knowledge more accessible, we could help clients build capability within their own teams, reduce risk and support better outcomes.'

Key takeaways
- Listen for what’s missing: understanding the challenges clients face beyond individual matters can uncover new ways to add value.
- Partner across disciplines: bringing together different expertise helped turn an idea into an engaging, scalable program.
- Solve for lasting impact: sharing knowledge builds capability that clients can take back into their organisations.

From 60 registrations to an industry resource
What started with around 60 registrations for our inaugural program has grown significantly. In 2024, more than 300 people registered, with the series reaching participants from more than 65 organisations, including government agencies, insurers and brokers.
For me, that growth shows the value of listening to what our clients and industry need, then bringing the right people together to respond.
And we’re continuing to evolve. In 2026, we’re expanding the series into two more states, partnering across our offices to make the program accessible to even more people.
That’s what Smarter Law means to me: looking beyond the immediate legal task and asking how we can use our knowledge differently to create lasting value – for our clients and the industries we work with, today and tomorrow.
'This was an excellent session – very informative and engaging. Looking forward to the next one.'
